The ophthalmology unit at the FOSCAL offers the scientific advancement of Excimer Laser surgery to correct visual defects such as myopia, farsightedness and astigmatism. This safe and highly precise technology has yielded excellent results, totally correcting defects in patients whose quality of life has been changed forever.
Laser surgery has enabled the correction of a wide range of visual defects thanks to the two most modern pieces of equipment in the world capable of performing these treatments: The Amaris Shwind and the Mel 80. Besides that, other advanced surgical techniques have been implemented in order to correct high visual defects. With the combination of the special intraocular lens implant and the Excimer Laser surgery we can correct cases with up to 26.00 diopters of myopia and 13.00 of farsightedness.
The FOSCAL, through the Virgilio Galvis Ophthalmological Center, has successfully corrected more than 11,000 national and international patients and is a leader in the country for Excimer Laser Surgery.
Using computer simulations of radiotherapy we are able to make precise dosage calculations that we then apply in the high energy linear accelerator and brachytherapy treatments. This increases the safety of the procedures and decreases secondary effects in normal tissues.
Outpatient and Hospital Chemotherapy
Fulfilling bio-safety rules and under the supervision of the head nurse of oncology, drugs are prepared and delivered following the instructions of hemato-oncological specialists. Depending on the case, the procedure can be done outpatient or in the hospital.
Surgery is the first therapeutic option in most malignant cases. For surgical procedures, a group of surgeons (oncologists, gynecologist-oncologists and plastic oncologists) count on modern technology, recovery rooms and the support of a nursing department that specializes in cancer patients.
Support Group for Patients and Family
Through educational workshops with nutritionists, social workers, nurses, psychologists and a medical group from the pain clinic, the patients and their families can be oriented and informed about the facts related to the disease in order to improve their quality of life.

The institution has the best equipment available for the gamma graphic images, both conventional and tomographic. A medical and paramedical staff guarantees permanent attention 12 hours a day as well as emergency attention when necessary.
The nationally certified Higuera Escalante Clinical Laboratory includes next generation equipment and a staff with sub-specialists in microbiology, mycology, genetics, chemistry, immunology, hormones, parapsychology and hematology that supports the needs of the whole medical complex and has become a reference for all of eastern Colombia.
It is a 24 hour support service that ensures the supply of blood or its components to the institution, covering the needs of both elective surgeries and emergencies. Donations of blood are guaranteed to be safe and free of infectious diseases thanks to effective and advanced control systems, earning us a Class A certification.
Specialized Service in Reproduction, Genetics and Maternal Fetal Medicine.
A group of interdisciplinary specialists in gynecology, endocrinology, perinatology, urology, genetics, biology and clinical laboratory work has formed a study and treatment center for infertile couples. They perform procedures such as homologous or heterologous insemination, IVF treatments (test tube baby) and ICSI (intracytoplasmic injection of sperm in the ovule).
Other services offered include pre-natal genetic studies to diagnosis fetal abnormalities, analysis of genetic syndromes, paternity testing and help for patients with recurrent abortions.
Extracorporeal Lithotripsy and Endourology
It is the non-invasive treatment of kidney stones (urinary calculosis) and biliary calculi (stones in the gallbladder or in the liver). This outpatient procedure is carried out by a group of specialists in urology who have made the research and also have a lot of clinical and surgical experience. Other urological fields are laparoscopic surgery, pediatric urology, urodynamics, transrectal prostate ultrasound, andrology for impotence, infertility, male menopause (andropause) and other male sexual and reproductive disorders (urology).
Photovaporization of the Prostate - Greenlight Laser.
The Greenlight Laser (PVP, or photovaporization of the prostate) uses a special wavelength of light which immediately vaporizes and removes enlarged prostate tissue.
It combines immediate symptom relief and dramatic flow-rate improvements with minimal side effects and fast operative and recovery times. With the PVP you avoid any of the normal problems that occur with other treatments (bleeding, scarring, impotence, delayed symptom relief, lengthy recovery) while any improvement in symptoms the others could provide, the PVP can provide better and with far less risk.
Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging
The Imaging Department makes all the diagnostic tests using high tech equipment and has a staff that constantly integrates new medical updates into their work. Their experience allows them to teach and do research that benefits the entire community.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging - MRI
The FOSCAL has a Magnetic Resonance 1.5 Tela Signa Excite HD with a high performance operating system and a very large database of imaging.
It supplies tridimensional images for the evaluation of coronary arteries and cardiac functions as well as serving as a virtual colonoscopy and bronchoscope with minimally invasive techniques.
Allows better quality image processing for exact analysis and an accurate diagnosis, decreasing the dose of radiation during treatments.
Othorhinolaryngology and Audiology
The electrophysiological audiology service of the FOSCAL has qualified professionals and equipment for oto acoustic emissions, auditory evoked potentials, middle ear analysis, real ear measurement and hearing aid analysis that allows us to give an accurate diagnosis of deafness and recommend the best option for rehabilitation.
Cochlear Implant Program
The rehabilitation program at FOSCAL, offered by the otorhinolaryngology and phonoaudiology service, Audiofon, has made many cochlear implant surgeries (bionic ears) for the rehabilitation of those who have become deaf or are have been deaf from birth. The institution has the program “Adopt a Deaf Child” whose principal aim is to collect used hearing aids to help lower income deaf children.
Tests offered include auditory evoked potentials (thresholds and sites of lesions), oto acoustic emissions by distortion products, electrocochleography and vestibular studies with electronistagmography and electroneuronography.
Center for Balance Disorders
The autoneuro vestibular study for balance disorders, along with electronistagmography computing allows for the objective diagnosis of the dizzy patient. Our medical treatment of rebalance training with an audio vestibular approach leads to the successful rehabilitation of the patient.
Voice Endoscopy and Laser Otorhinolaryngology
The use of a laser in this specialty enables the appropriate surgical management of hearing, nose, paranasal sinuses, voice problems, snoring due to sleep apnea and tonsil surgery without extraction. The visualization of the voicebox through telelaryngoscopy and laryngeal stroboscopy identifies the slightest variations which may be causing voice problems (dysphonia).
Detection and Surgery Programs of Face and Neck Tumors
Multiple tumors (both benign and malignant) that sit in the nose, the para nasal sinuses, the throat and other structures in the neck can now be detected early through video endoscopy. These tests allow for the planning and realization of face and neck cancer surgery in early and advanced stages as well as oncologic rejuvination management.
Allergy Diagnosis and Intervention
Allergic problems of the upper respiratory tract are established using skin tests to determine the adequate amount of medical and surgical treatments.

Orthopedics and Trauma
Last Generation Technical Resources
Surgeons dedicated to the comprehensive treatment of patients with surgical diseases of the central nervous system, skull and spine offer a specialized service of the highest standards. The development of neurosurgery requires precision, knowledge and experience in order to facilitate the use of new techniques and treatments to eliminate the high risks that previously existed in this complex process.
A set of computer-assisted technologies used by neurosurgeons to guide or ‘navigate’ within the confines of the skull or spinal column during surgery. Neuronavigation provides intra operative orientation to the surgeon and helps in planning a precise surgical approach to the targeted lesion. It also helps define the surrounding neurovascular structures and allows a graphic interaction with optimum intra operative, tridimensional orientation. Today, it’s the system with the greatest accuracy and safety for treating brain injuries, limiting the amount of approaches and radical surgeries.
Clinical studies have shown that the recovery times of hospital stay have been reduced significantly with the use of aggressive post surgery pain treatment. This technique improves pulmonary function and reduces the need for artificial respiration as well as the probability of complications after surgery. Besides that it reduces anxiety and improves mood and the quality of life for the patient.
At the FOSCAL a group of specialists, coordinated by anesthesiologists (experts in pain management) do an excellent job using safe methods such as continuous infusion shots, epidural catheters, nerve blocks, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, physiotherapy, psychotherapy and alternative therapy to offer a better hospital stay.
